Arnold Sommerfeld was a very important German physicist.

He was a leader in two big areas called atomic physics and quantum physics. These studies look at how the tiniest parts of our world work. He also helped many people become great scientists through his teaching.

His work helped change how we think about the physical world. He showed that math could explain how nature moves and works.

Sommerfeld found new ways to describe the tiny parts of an atom. He introduced the second quantum number, called the azimuthal quantum number. He also found the third quantum number, known as the magnetic quantum number. These numbers help scientists understand the paths of tiny particles. He also worked on the fine-structure constant.

This constant is a number that helps explain how light and atoms interact. He even studied how X-ray waves move through space.

His journey began in a city called Königsberg. He was born there on 5 December 1868. His father was a doctor from a well-known family. Arnold studied math and science at the University of Königsberg. He earned his Ph.D. on 24 October 1891.

Later, he moved to the University of Göttingen to work with famous mathematicians. He spent many years learning and teaching across different German cities.

Sommerfeld became a professor in Munich in 1906. He led the new Theoretical Physics Institute there. This was a very special job. At that time, many people thought doing experiments was more important than math. Sommerfeld helped change that idea. He showed that theoretical physics, which uses math, is a main way to find new truths.

His work at Munich lasted for 32 years.

He was a wonderful teacher and mentor to others.

He advised seven students who went on to win Nobel Prizes. He also supervised at least 30 other famous scientists. Some of his famous students included Werner Heisenberg and Wolfgang Pauli. He wrote a large set of books called Lectures on Theoretical Physics. These six volumes were made from his many years of teaching notes.
