Aristotle was an ancient Greek philosopher and a polymath. A polymath is a person who studies many different subjects.

His work covered many fields, including natural sciences, linguistics, economics, and politics. He also wrote about psychology, the arts, and biology. Aristotle is often called the first scientist. This is because he used systematic methods to study the world. He founded the Peripatetic school of philosophy in Athens. This school grew into the Aristotelian tradition. This tradition helped set the groundwork for modern science.

Aristotle was born in 384 BC in Stagira. His father was Nicomachus, a physician for King Amyntas of Macedon.

Because of his father's work, Aristotle likely developed an early interest in medicine and biology. His parents died when he was young. A man named Proxenus of Atarneus became his guardian. At age eighteen, Aristotle moved to Athens. He joined Plato's Academy to continue his education. He stayed there for nearly twenty years. Plato even called him the "mind of the school." After Plato died in 347 BC, Aristotle left Athens. He went to Asia Minor to work with his former student, Hermias. During this time, he studied botany and marine biology on the island of Lesbos.

In 343 BC, Aristotle moved to Pella in Macedon. Philip II of Macedon asked him to tutor his son, Alexander. Alexander would later become known as Alexander the Great.

Aristotle taught Alexander in the gardens of Mieza. He taught subjects like ethics, politics, and literature. He even gave Alexander an annotated copy of the Iliad. Aristotle's influence on Alexander is a famous part of history. Eventually, Aristotle returned to Athens for a second time. He rented a building called the Lyceum. This building was near a sacred grove of Apollo Lykeios. Because he taught while walking along a colonnade, his followers were called Peripatetics. He built a large library at the Lyceum. This library held manuscripts, maps, and museum objects.

Aristotle's work on logic is very important. He created the earliest systematic study of logic.

His logical works were later collected into six books called the Organon. This collection was compiled around 40 BC. The books include the Categories and On Interpretation. They also include the Prior and Posterior Analytics. These books help people understand the rules of reasoning. One of his main methods was the syllogism. A syllogism is a way to build a logical argument. His work on logic remained the dominant form in the West until the 19th century. Even the philosopher Immanuel Kant said Aristotle's logic was complete.

Aristotle also studied what we now call metaphysics. He did not use that specific word himself. He called it "first philosophy." He believed this was the study of things that are eternal and unchanging.

He wanted to understand the nature of being. He also studied the physical world through his work in Physics. He looked at how things move and how they grow. He used the concept of "four causes" to explain why things exist.

This allowed him to study the material, form, and purpose of objects. His scientific ideas lasted through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. They were not fully replaced until the Enlightenment arrived.

His influence reached many different cultures and religions. During the Middle Ages, Muslim scholars called him "The First Teacher." In the Christian tradition, he was known simply as "The Philosopher." The poet Dante called him "the master of those who know." He influenced the scholastic tradition of the Catholic Church. His ideas on ethics are also still studied today. People use his ideas to explore virtue ethics. This is the study of how to be a good person.

Aristotle died in 342 BC in Chalcis, Euboea. He died of natural causes. Before he died, he left his works to his successor, Theophrastus. Theophrastus then passed the works to Neleus of Scepsis. The papers were hidden for a time to keep them safe. Eventually, they were purchased by a collector named Apellicon. Only about one third of Aristotle's original writings have survived to the present day. Most of these surviving works were actually lecture notes. They were meant to help his students learn. Even though many books were lost, his ideas changed the world forever.
