At first, people used wood to make homes and temples. Later, they began to use stone and brick. Many early buildings were churches. These were built in a style called Byzantine. This style came from Greek masters.

In the city of Kiev, builders used a special way to lay bricks. They used alternating rows of stone and flat brick. This is called opus mixtum.

As time went on, new shapes appeared. One famous shape is the onion dome.

These domes look like onions. They are very helpful for the weather. The shape helps snow slide off the roof. In the city of Novgorod, builders used local limestone. This gave their churches a pink color. In Pskov, builders used wood planks for roofs. This made the roofs flat. Over many years, many styles joined together. This includes art nouveau and neoclassical styles. Each style shows the skill of the people who lived there.
