Later, a man named Ernst Werner von Siemens helped pay for a museum to keep it. Other fossils have names like the Munich Specimen or the Daiting Specimen.

For a long time, scientists considered it the oldest known member of the Avialae group, which includes modern birds. While newer discoveries like Anchiornis and Xiaotingia suggest other animals may be older, Archaeopteryx remains a vital subject of study. It lived approximately 150 million years ago. At that time, the area that is now southern Germany was an archipelago of islands. These islands sat in a shallow, warm tropical sea much closer to the equator than they are today.

This animal serves as a classic example of a transitional fossil. A transitional fossil is a remain that shows traits from two different groups. Archaeopteryx shows a mix of dinosaur and bird features. It had several traits shared with dromaeosaurid and troodontid dinosaurs. These included jaws with sharp teeth and a long, bony tail. It also possessed three fingers with claws on its wings and a hyperextensible second toe, often called a "killing claw."

However, it also had advanced flight feathers. These feathers suggest the animal could fly or glide. The presence of feathers also suggests that Archaeopteryx may have been warm-blooded.

The fossils we study today come from the Solnhofen Limestone formation in Germany. This limestone was created in the ancient tropical seas where these animals lived. Most of the fourteen known body fossils include impressions of feathers. Because these are advanced flight feathers, they prove that feather evolution began before the Late Jurassic period.

The history of its discovery is quite famous. In 1861, a single feather was described by researchers.

That same year, the first complete skeleton, the London Specimen, was announced. This specimen was missing most of its head and neck. It was sold to the Natural History Museum in London for £700.
