The Arabian horse is a distinctive breed with deep historical roots in West Asia.

It is recognized as one of the oldest modern horse breeds in existence. While modern DNA cannot trace exact breed purity beyond 200 years, archaeology tells a much older story. Evidence shows horses in the Middle East with characteristics similar to modern Arabians dating back 3,500 years. Today, these horses are among the ten most popular breeds globally. They have spread worldwide through trade and war, influencing almost every modern riding horse breed.

Physically, the Arabian is built for both speed and extreme endurance. They possess a refined, wedge-shaped head with a concave or "dished" profile. Many individuals have a slight bulge on the forehead called a jibbah. This feature may increase sinus capacity, which helped them survive in dry desert climates. Their necks are arched and feature a large, well-set windpipe. This structure is supported by a clean throatlatch, known to the Bedouin as the mitbah.

These anatomical traits allow for better breathing and flexibility when using a bridle.

An Arabian's skeletal structure contributes to its unique movement and agility. Most horses have six lumbar vertebrae, but some Arabians have only five. They may also have 17 pairs of ribs instead of the usual 18.

This results in a compact body with a short back. While some believe their flat croup prevents proper use of the hindquarters, this is a misconception. The croup is formed by the sacral vertebrae, while the hip angle is determined by the ilium. In a quality Arabian, the hip angle is typically about 35 degrees, while the croup is about 25 degrees. This combination allows for the impulsion needed for athletic movement.

There are different physical variations within the breed depending on their intended use. Some Arabians possess wider, more powerful hindquarters for intense bursts of activity. These individuals are often suited for disciplines like reining. Other Arabians have longer, leaner musculature. This build is better for long stretches of flatwork, such as horse racing. Regardless of these variations, the breed is famous for its stamina. In international FEI-sponsored endurance events, Arabians and half-Arabians are the dominant performers. They are highly valued for being strong, sound, and capable of traveling great distances.

Despite their refined appearance, Arabians are remarkably strong animals. They are often described as "light horses," but they possess a high density of bone. They also feature short cannons, strong hoof walls, and a broad, short back. These traits provide physical strength comparable to much taller animals. Even a smaller Arabian can carry a heavy rider effectively. However, they are not built for the heavy labor tasks of a draft horse. They remain a versatile breed capable of participating in almost any equestrian pursuit.

The temperament of the Arabian is a direct result of centuries of selective breeding. The nomadic Bedouin people prized these horses and kept them close for protection. Some were even brought inside family tents to shield them from theft. This close contact led humans to select for horses that were cooperative and willing to please. Consequently, Arabians are known for being intelligent, quick to learn, and good-natured.

Because of this, the USEF allows children to show stallions in nearly all youth show ring classes. This is a rare privilege not granted to many other breeds.

Arabians are classified as "hot-blooded" horses, a term for spirited, sensitive breeds. This category includes the Thoroughbred and the Akhal-Teke. While their intelligence allows them to learn quickly, it also means they can learn bad habits. They require competent, respectful handling and do not tolerate abusive training.

Their sensitivity means they can become anxious if treated poorly, though they are rarely vicious. They are highly communicative animals that thrive on a strong bond with their riders.

Coloration in the Arabian breed is also quite specific. The Arabian Horse Association registers bay, gray, chestnut, black, and roan. Gray is very common, and many horses that look white are actually genetically gray.

All Arabians have black skin under their hair, which protects them from intense desert sun. While the classic roan gene does not exist in the breed, some express patterns called rabicano or sabino. Sabino coloring is characterized by irregular white spotting on the legs, belly, and face. A very small number of Arabians are born with a true white coat and pink skin due to a specific DNA mutation.
