Historically, these horses were prized as powerful war horses by the nobility. Today, they are recognized for their intelligence, sensitivity, and docile nature. When treated with respect, they are highly responsive and cooperative learners.

The physical build of an Andalusian is very specific. They are strongly built and compact, often featuring long, thick manes and tails. Their profile is typically straight or slightly convex. Breeders discourage ultra-convex or concave facial profiles in breed shows. They possess long, broad necks that lead to well-defined withers. A massive chest and a short back are also common traits. Their hindquarters are broad and strong, ending in a well-rounded croup.

Movement is a defining characteristic of the breed. Their gaits are described as extended, elevated, and harmonious. A 2001 study compared the kinematics of Andalusians to Arabian horses. The study found that Andalusians exhibit greater flexing in both fore and hind joints. This movement is consistent with the elevated trot typical of the breed. They also tend to overtrack less than other breeds. This means their hind foot lands less far ahead of the front hoof print. These traits make them excellent for advanced collection and difficult turns.

There are distinct variations and strains within the breed. One notable substrain is the Carthusian. Breeders often consider the Carthusian to be the purest strain of the Andalusian. While there is no genetic evidence for this, it remains a preferred bloodline. The Carthusian strain sometimes shows unique traits linked to the stallion Esclavo. These include warts under the tail and occasional "horns." These horns are actually frontal bosses, which are calcium-like deposits near the temples or ears.

The history of the Andalusian is long and complex. Their ancestors have lived on the Iberian Peninsula for thousands of years. Various cultures, including the Celts, Romans, and Arabs, influenced these horses. By the 15th century, the Andalusian was recognized as a distinct breed. In the 13th century, Carthusian monks began keeping some of the earliest written pedigrees in Europe. These monks managed stud farms in Jerez, Seville, and Cazalla. They bred powerful horses for the Crown of Castile using Spanish Jennets.

For centuries, the Andalusian was known as the "royal horse of Europe." The Spanish government used the horses as tools of diplomacy. They gifted horses to favored royalty to build international relationships. Kings in France, such as Louis XIV, were famous admirers of the breed. In the 16th and 17th centuries, they were considered the finest horses in the world. However, the breed faced many challenges in the 19th century. Warfare, disease, and crossbreeding caused a dramatic reduction in their numbers.

Despite these losses, the breed has seen a significant recovery. By 2010, there were more than 185,000 registered Andalusians worldwide. They are closely related to the Lusitano horse of Portugal. The Andalusian has also helped develop many other warmblood breeds in Europe and the Americas. One example of a breed with Andalusian ancestry is the Azteca in the Western Hemisphere. Today, they are used for dressage, show jumping, and driving. They are also very popular in historical and fantasy movies.
