It was made by director Francis Ford Coppola. The story takes place during the Vietnam War in 1969. It is loosely inspired by a book called Heart of Darkness. The plot follows Captain Benjamin Willard on a long river journey. He travels from South Vietnam into Cambodia. His secret mission is to find Colonel Walter Kurtz. Kurtz is a Special Forces officer who has gone rogue. He is accused of murder and is thought to be insane.

The journey happens on a river patrol boat called a PBR. The crew includes Chief Petty Officer Phillips and sailors named Chef, Lance, and Mr. Clean. They must navigate the Nùng River to reach Kurtz's outpost. Along the way, they meet a helicopter unit led by Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore. This unit helps them enter the river during a large air assault. The soldiers use music, specifically "Ride of the Valkyries," during the mission. The crew faces many dangers as they move deeper into the jungle. Tensions rise among the men as the mission gets harder.

Making this movie was a very long and difficult task. It was supposed to be a five-month shoot in the Philippines. However, many problems caused it to last over a year. Severe weather destroyed expensive sets that the crew had built. Actor Martin Sheen even suffered a near-fatal heart attack while filming. Another actor, Marlon Brando, arrived on set unprepared for his role. Coppola had to edit over a million feet of film. A documentary called Hearts of Darkness tells the story of these struggles.

Despite the hard work, the film was a huge success. It won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. When it was released on August 15, 1979, it earned $150 million worldwide. The film was also nominated for eight Academy Awards. It won two of those awards, for Best Cinematography and Best Sound. Vittorio Storaro was the cinematographer who received the award. The film is now considered one of the greatest movies ever made. The U.S. Library of Congress even selected it for preservation in 2000.

Today, people still study this film for its art and history. Francis Ford Coppola released different versions of the movie later on. One version is called Apocalypse Now Redux, which was released in 2001. Another version is the Apocalypse Now Final Cut, which came out in 2019. This Final Cut is the version that Coppola likes best. The movie remains a major part of film history. It shows how much effort goes into making a masterpiece. Many viewers still find the story and the sounds very powerful.
