Making the movie was very hard. The shoot lasted over a year. Severe weather destroyed expensive sets. One actor, Martin Sheen, had a near-fatal heart attack. Making the film was a big struggle. Still, the movie was a great success. It won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. It also won two Academy Awards. These awards were for Best Sound and Best Cinematography. Many people call it one of the greatest films ever made. The U.S. Library of Congress even saved it. They chose it because it is culturally important. Coppola later made new versions of the film. One is called the Redux version. Another is the Final Cut. This version is his favorite.
