Aphex Twin

Richard David James is a famous musician from the United Kingdom.

Most people know him by his professional name, Aphex Twin. He is a composer and a DJ who works with electronic music. His sounds are very unique and have influenced many other artists. Many famous music magazines call him one of the most important artists in modern electronic music. He creates music that can be very calm or very energetic. This wide range of sounds makes his work very special to listeners.

James makes his music using many different electronic tools. As a young boy, he loved to explore how things made sound. He played with the strings inside a piano. He also took apart old tape machines to see how they worked. At age 11, he even made weird noises using a home computer. Later, he bought his first synthesizer when he was 12 years old. He often changed old machines and junk to create new sounds. This hands-on way of working helped him build his own style.

His career began in the late 1980s in Cornwall.

He used to play music at free parties in secret places. These parties happened in spots like sand dunes and coastal coves. In 1991, he released his first big record called Analogue Bubblebath. That same year, he helped start his own record label called Rephlex Records. In 1992, he released his first full album, Selected Ambient Works 85–92. This album helped him become famous all over the world. He later signed to a label called Warp to release more music.

James has released many famous albums and singles over the years. His album ...I Care Because You Do came out in 1995. In 1996, he released the Richard D. James Album with very unusual rhythms. He also had big hits like "Come to Daddy" in 1997. These songs had music videos that brought him even more attention. In 2014, he released the album Syro on the Warp label. This album won him a Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album. He even received a Grammy nomination in 2023 for his single "Blackbox Life Recorder 21f."

His music connects to many different styles of sound. Some of his work is ambient, which is very soft and peaceful. Other music uses a style called drill 'n' bass with very fast drums. He is also a key part of a genre called intelligent dance music, or IDM.

He sometimes uses different names, like AFX or Caustic Window, for his songs. Even today, he shares his music with people on the internet. His many different sounds continue to inspire new musicians everywhere.
