An apex predator is a hunter at the top of a food chain.

This means no other animals hunt them. These hunters have been around for a very long time. One lived in the sea 500 million years ago. Its name was Anomalocaris.

Top hunters help keep nature in balance. They do this by controlling how many other animals live. This can cause a trophic cascade. A trophic cascade is a set of changes that moves down the food chain. For example, wolves were brought back to Yellowstone National Park.

This changed how elk moved. Because the elk moved, trees like willows grew back. This created homes for many other species.

Humans also interact with these animals. Some people use birds of prey to hunt. Others use ecotourism to see sharks in the ocean.

Scientists still study if humans are apex predators. Some say we are, but others disagree based on what we eat.
