Antony Hewish was a famous British radio astronomer. He spent his life studying the stars using radio waves.

Radio astronomy is a special way to look at space. Instead of using light, scientists use radio signals from the sky. This helps them find things that are hard to see with regular telescopes. Hewish's work helped us understand the universe in a much deeper way. His discoveries changed how we think about the stars.

To find new things in space, Hewish needed a special tool. He proposed building a large phased array radio telescope. This is a group of many parts working together as one big tool. In 1965, he found the money to build it. This tool was called the Interplanetary Scintillation Array. It was built at the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory near Cambridge. The big project was finished in 1967.

One of his students, Jocelyn Bell, helped build this array. She was assigned to look at all the data the tool collected. Soon, she found a strange radio signal from space. At first, Hewish thought it might just be interference on Earth. However, the signal stayed in the same spot in the sky. This meant it was likely coming from a pulsar. A pulsar is a type of star that sends out pulses of energy.

Hewish received many great honors for his science work. In 1969, he won the Eddington Medal from the Royal Astronomical Society. He also won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1974. He shared this big prize with Martin Ryle. Their work helped develop radio aperture synthesis, which is a way to make better radio images.

Some people thought Jocelyn Bell should have shared the Nobel Prize too. Hewish was a professor at the Cavendish Laboratory for many years.

Hewish lived a long and very busy life. He was born on May 11, 1924. He lived to be 97 years old and died in 2021. He married Marjorie Elizabeth Catherine Richards in 1950. They had a son who became a physicist and a daughter who was a teacher. After he died, his family gave his Nobel Prize medal to Churchill College in Cambridge. This college was a place where he was a fellow. His life shows how looking at the sky can lead to amazing discoveries.
