Antonio Gramsci was a significant Italian Marxist philosopher, linguist, and politician. He is best remembered for his deep analysis of how power works in society.

Gramsci was a founding member of the Italian Communist Party. He also became a famous critic of Benito Mussolini and the fascist movement in Italy. His life was marked by both intense intellectual work and great personal hardship. Even while imprisoned, his ideas continued to grow and spread across the world. He remains a central figure in 20th-century political theory.

Gramsci was born in 1891 on the island of Sardinia. His family had complex roots, including Albanian ancestry from the town of Gramsh.

His childhood was difficult due to financial struggles and health issues. He suffered from a spinal deformity that left him hunchbacked. Some researchers believe this was caused by Pott disease, a form of tuberculosis. These early challenges shaped his understanding of poverty and social neglect. He witnessed how the people of Sardinia were often ignored by the industrial North.

In 1911, Gramsci moved to the city of Turin to attend the University of Turin. There, he focused his studies on literature and linguistics. He also engaged deeply with history and philosophy.

Turin was a center of rapid industrialization during this time. Large factories like Fiat and Lancia were growing quickly. Gramsci observed the rise of trade unions and industrial social conflicts. These experiences helped him connect academic theory to the real lives of workers. He eventually left his formal education in 1915 to focus on political work.

Gramsci became a prolific journalist and a leader within the Italian Socialist Party. He helped found the weekly newspaper L'Ordine Nuovo in 1919. This paper advocated for workers' councils to organize production. He believed these councils were essential for workers to gain political control. In 1921, he helped found the Communist Party of Italy in the town of Livorno.

During this period, he also traveled to Russia. While there, he met Julia Schucht, a Jewish violinist. They married in 1923 and had two sons, Delio and Giuliano.

His political work led to a long period of imprisonment. In 1926, the fascist government arrested him. He remained in prison until shortly before his death in 1937.

Despite these conditions, he produced a massive amount of work. He wrote more than 3,000 pages across more than 30 different notebooks. These are known as his Prison Notebooks. In them, he analyzed everything from the French Revolution to the nature of religion. His writing was a way to continue his intellectual struggle against fascism.

Gramsci's most famous contribution is the theory of cultural hegemony. This concept explains how the ruling class, or bourgeoisie, maintains its power. He argued that they do not rely solely on violence or economic force. Instead, they use cultural institutions to spread their ideology. By controlling culture, they make their own values seem like common sense to everyone else. This allows them to maintain leadership without constant coercion. This theory changed how scholars look at the relationship between culture and the state.

Because he moved away from strict economic ideas, Gramsci is often called a neo-Marxist. He viewed Marxism as a "philosophy of praxis," which means a philosophy of action. He believed that ideas and social practices are deeply connected. His work connects to many fields, including sociology, linguistics, and history. He drew inspiration from many thinkers, including Machiavelli, Darwin, and Freud. Today, his ideas continue to help people understand the complex ways that societies function and change.
