Antonie van Leeuwenhoek was a man from Delft. He lived a long time ago. He was not a trained scientist. Instead, he was a shopkeeper who sold cloth. 
Antonie loved to make things. He became very good at making glass lenses. He used a hot flame to pull glass into thin wires. This helped him make tiny, powerful lenses. He used these to build his own microscopes. 
With his tools, he saw a hidden world. He saw tiny living things in pond water. He called them animalcules, which means "little animals." These were the first microbes people ever saw. 
He also saw red blood cells and muscle fibers. He even saw how blood flows in tiny tubes. At first, some people did not believe him. They thought his findings were too strange. But he kept writing letters to the Royal Society. Eventually, they saw he was right. He is now called the Father of Microbiology. This is the study of tiny life.

His life began in Delft on October 24, 1632. His father was a basket maker who died when Antonie was only five. Later, his mother remarried, and he lived with an uncle for a time. At age 16, he worked as an apprentice in Amsterdam. By 1654, he married Barbara de Mey and opened his own shop in Delft. 
In the 1670s, Leeuwenhoek began sharing his amazing finds with the Royal Society in London. 

We can think of Leeuwenhoek as a pioneer who opened a door to a new world. Before him, no one knew that tiny, single-celled organisms existed. 
Antonie Philips van Leeuwenhoek was a Dutch microbiologist and microscopist. He lived during the Golden Age of Dutch art, science, and technology. 

Leeuwenhoek was largely a self-taught man. In his youth, he worked as a draper. A draper is someone who sells cloth, yarn, and ribbons. He founded his own shop in 1654 in Delft. He also held several municipal jobs. He served as a chamberlain for the city sheriffs for almost 40 years. He was also a land surveyor and the official "wine-gauger" for Delft. He managed city wine imports and taxation. 
His interest in science began with lensmaking. He wanted to see the quality of his shop's thread more clearly. He developed a unique method to create powerful, single-lensed microscopes. He would place a small rod of soda lime glass into a hot flame. He would then pull the hot glass apart to create long whiskers. By heating the ends again, he created a very small, high-quality lens. This method allowed him to achieve much higher magnification than others. He often kept this technique a secret to protect his business. 
Using these tools, Leeuwenhoek discovered a hidden world. He originally called the tiny creatures he saw "animalcules." Most of these are now called unicellular organisms, which means they are made of a single cell. He also observed multicellular organisms in pond water. His observations included muscle fibers, bacteria, and red blood cells. He was also among the first to see spermatozoa and crystals in gouty tophi. Notably, he was one of the first to observe blood flowing through capillaries. 
Leeuwenhoek shared his findings through letters rather than books. He wrote in his own colloquial Dutch. He sent these many letters to the Royal Society in London. Henry Oldenburg, the society's secretary, translated them into Latin and English. In 1673, the society published his first letter about mold, bees, and lice. In 1674, he made his most significant discovery regarding moving objects. He realized these tiny objects were living animals.
His discoveries were not always accepted immediately. When he reported seeing single-celled organisms in 1676, the Royal Society was skeptical. No one had ever known such life existed. To resolve this, the society sent a group of people to Delft. This group included several ministers and Sir Robert Gordon. They investigated whether Leeuwenhoek was observing clearly or if scientific theories needed to change. By 1677, the Royal Society fully acknowledged his observations. He was elected to the Royal Society in February 1680. 
By the end of the 17th century, Leeuwenhoek had a virtual monopoly on microscopic discovery. Even the famous scientist Robert Hooke noted that the field rested on one man's shoulders. Many notable people visited him to see his tiny creatures. These included the philosopher Leibniz and the English King James II. He even visited Tsar Peter the Great in 1697. By the time he died on 26 August 1723, he had written about 190 letters to the Royal Society. His life connected the world of commerce to the frontiers of biological science.
