Anton Mussert was a Dutch politician who lived a long and controversial life. He was born on May 11, 1894, in a place called Werkendam. This town is in the northern part of North Brabant. As a young man, he was very good at technical things. He went to the Delft University of Technology to study civil engineering. This is a job where people learn to build important structures. In 1917, he married his aunt, Maria Witlam. His mother did not agree with this choice.

In the 1930s, Mussert became very active in politics. On December 14, 1931, he helped start a new group. This group was called the National Socialist Movement in the Netherlands, or the NSB. He and ten other people founded it. The NSB was similar to the political party in Germany. In 1933, only 600 people joined a protest in Utrecht. However, the group grew much larger by the next year. In 1935, the NSB received 300,000 votes in an election. This was almost 8% of all the votes in the country.

World War II changed everything for the Netherlands. In April 1940, the Dutch government worried about a coup. They heard rumors that Mussert's followers might kidnap Queen Wilhelmina. Then, on May 10, 1940, German troops invaded the country. Mussert worked with the German leaders who were in charge. He was given a title in 1942. It was "Leider van het Nederlandsche Volk," which means "Leader of the Dutch People." Even with this title, he had very little real power. The German leaders held the true control over the land.

Mussert helped the German occupation in many ways. He worked with the Gestapo to stop people from resisting. He also helped form a military unit called the 23rd SS Volunteer Panzer Grenadier Division Nederland. This group trained in Hamburg before going to the Eastern Front. During the war, things became very hard for Dutch citizens. In the winter of 1944 and 1945, a crisis called the Hongerwinter happened. Many people died because there was not enough food. Mussert stayed silent during this very sad time.

When the war in Europe ended, Mussert's time as a leader was over. Allied forces captured him in The Hague on May 7, 1945. He was taken to a trial that lasted two days. The court found him guilty of high treason. This means he had betrayed his own nation. He asked Queen Wilhelmina for mercy, but she said no. On May 7, 1946, Mussert was executed by a firing squad. This happened at a place called Waalsdorpervlakte. It was a site where many Dutch citizens had died under the Nazi regime.

Anton Adriaan Mussert was a Dutch politician who led a controversial movement during a dark period in European history. He was born on May 11, 1894, in Werkendam, located in the northern part of North Brabant. As a young man, he excelled in technical subjects. He studied civil engineering at the Delft University of Technology. In 1917, he married his aunt, Maria Witlam. This marriage faced strong opposition from his mother.

In the 1920s, Mussert joined several far-right organizations. One group was the Dietsche Bond, which wanted a "Greater Netherlands." This idea included Flanders, which is the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. On December 14, 1931, Mussert and ten others founded the National Socialist Movement in the Netherlands, known as the NSB. This party was a Dutch version of the German National Socialist German Workers' Party. In its early years, the NSB actually included several hundred Jewish members. This changed once the German party pushed for a more anti-Semitic course.

The NSB grew in size through the 1930s. A 1933 demonstration in Utrecht only had 600 supporters. However, a rally in Amsterdam in 1934 drew 25,000 demonstrators. In the 1935 parliamentary elections, the NSB earned 300,000 votes. This represented almost 8% of the national vote. By the 1937 election, the party's support dropped to about half of that amount. Following this decline, Mussert focused on preventing resistance to a German invasion.

World War II brought major changes to the Netherlands. In April 1940, the Dutch government declared a state of siege. This happened after reports that Mussert's followers planned to kidnap Queen Wilhelmina during a coup. On May 10, 1940, German troops invaded the country. During the occupation, Mussert was allowed to suppress all political parties except the NSB. He was not made prime minister. Instead, an Austrian Nazi named Arthur Seyss-Inquart became the Reichskommissar. Berlin used Mussert to try to control the uncooperative Dutch people.

Mussert collaborated closely with the German occupation government. He worked with the Gestapo, a German secret police force, to stop resistance. In 1940, he allowed NSB members to train with the SS-Standarte 'Westland.' He also helped organize the Nederlandsche SS as a division of the NSB. In February 1941, he oversaw the formation of the 23rd SS Volunteer Panzer Grenadier Division Nederland. This unit trained in Hamburg before being sent to the Eastern Front near Leningrad. The division fought alongside German allies but suffered large losses.

As the war continued, Mussert's influence shifted. In December 1942, Adolf Hitler named him "Leider van het Nederlandsche Volk," or Leader of the Dutch People. However, this was a nominal title with very little actual power. By May 1943, Hitler told Mussert he would never have real political control. This was because Mussert had lost control over the Dutch SS and military units. During the "Hongerwinter" of 1944 and 1945, a severe food crisis occurred. Approximately 18,000 people died during this period. Mussert stayed silent during this crisis to protect his remaining influence.

The human cost of the war in the Netherlands was very high. By the end of the war, 205,901 Dutch citizens had died. This was a per capita death rate of 2.36%. This was the highest rate among all German-occupied countries in Western Europe. Additionally, 30,000 people died in the Dutch East Indies due to fighting or internment. In the Dutch East Indies, 100,000 civilians and 50,000 military personnel were interned by the Japanese.

After Germany surrendered, Mussert was arrested on May 7, 1945. He was found at the NSB office in The Hague. He faced a two-day trial and was convicted of high treason. This is the crime of betraying one's own country. He was sentenced to death on December 12, 1945. Mussert appealed to Queen Wilhelmina for clemency, but she refused. On May 7, 1946, he was executed by a firing squad. The execution took place at Waalsdorpervlakte, a site where many Dutch citizens had been killed by the Nazi regime.
