The Anti-Rightist Campaign was a major political movement in China. It lasted from 1957 to about 1959. Chairman Mao Zedong started this campaign to find and remove "Rightists." These were people the government believed were against its rules. This movement changed how China was run for many years. It turned the country into a place where only one party held power.

To understand the campaign, we must look at how it worked. It began after the Hundred Flowers Campaign. That earlier movement had encouraged people to share their ideas. However, Mao Zedong soon saw these criticisms as a threat. He wanted to stop what he called "poisonous weeds" in the press. The government looked for people who favored capitalism or disagreed with state rules. These people were often called intellectuals, like teachers or writers.

History shows that the campaign happened in different stages. The first wave started in June 1957. During this time, many people were labeled as Rightists. One example is Chu Anping, who was attacked for his ideas. By the end of 1957, 300,000 people had been labeled. A second wave followed the Lushan Conference in 1959. This part of the movement focused on leaders who disagreed with government plans.

The impact of the campaign was very large. Official records say 552,877 people were persecuted. However, many researchers believe the real number was much higher. Some think it was between 1 million and 3 million people. Some even suggest it reached 5 million. Many people faced hard punishments like losing jobs or being sent to labor camps. In places like Jiabiangou, many prisoners died from hunger.

This period left a long legacy in China. It changed how law and science were practiced in the country. For a long time, people were afraid to speak their minds. After Mao died in 1976, things began to change. Leaders like Deng Xiaoping helped many people get their rights back. This period of fixing mistakes is called Boluan Fanzheng. Even so, the campaign's effects on the economy and schools lasted for decades.
