She was born Phoebe Ann Mosey on August 13, 1860, in Ohio. Her family lived in a log cabin in Darke County. Life was very hard for her because her family was poor. Her father died from pneumonia after a blizzard in 1866. To help her mother and siblings, Annie learned to hunt and trap.

By age eight, she was already shooting to provide food. Her skills were so good that she helped pay the farm mortgage by age fifteen.

Annie's path to fame began with a surprising contest.

In 1875 or 1881, a marksman named Frank E. Butler made a bet. He thought he could beat any local shooter in Cincinnati. A fifteen-year-old girl named Annie took the challenge. She won the match and the bet. Later, Annie and Frank married and became a performing team. They joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West show in 1885.

This was the start of her life as a superstar.

As a performer, Annie did things that amazed every audience. She used her skill to perform incredible tricks. She could shoot a cigar right out of her husband's hand. She could even split the edge of a playing card from 30 paces away.

Because of her talent, the famous leader Sitting Bull called her "Little Sure Shot." She became America's first female star in this big show. She earned more money than almost everyone except Buffalo Bill. Her fame grew so much that people called free tickets "Annie Oakleys."

Annie traveled all over the world to show her talent.

She performed in Europe for many important leaders. She met Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and King Umberto I of Italy. She even met the German Kaiser Wilhelm II. Some say she shot the ashes off his cigarette. During her career, she also worked with early film technology. In 1894, her acts were filmed for a Kinetoscope. This was one of the very first ways people could watch moving pictures.

Annie Oakley was more than just a performer. She cared about how women could protect themselves. She believed women should learn marksmanship for self-defense. In 1898, she even wrote to President William McKinley about this. She offered to provide a company of 50 lady sharpshooters for the war.
