Netrebko's path to international stardom began with significant dedication and labor. While she was a student at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, she worked as a janitor. She performed cleaning duties at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg. During this time, the conductor Valery Gergiev noticed her. He recognized her potential and became her vocal mentor. Under his guidance, she made her professional stage debut in 1994. She was 22 years old when she performed the role of Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro.

The evolution of her voice is a central part of her musical identity. In the early stages of her career, she was known for lyric and coloratura roles. Coloratura refers to singing that involves many fast, light, and decorative notes. As her voice matured, she transitioned into heavier 19th-century romantic roles. These roles require greater volume and dramatic power. Notable examples include her performances as Leonora in Il trovatore and Lady Macbeth in Macbeth. Since 2016, she has increasingly focused on the verismo repertoire. Verismo is a style of opera that emphasizes intense, realistic human emotions.

Netrebko achieved a major international breakthrough in August 2002. This occurred during her performance as Donna Anna in Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Salzburg Festival. She made her American debut with the San Francisco Opera in 1995. In 2002, she debuted with the Metropolitan Opera as Natasha in the premiere of Prokofiev's War and Peace. She also made debuts at the Vienna State Opera and the Bavarian State Opera in 2003.

Throughout her career, Netrebko has received numerous prestigious honors and titles. In 2007, she was included on the Time 100 list of influential people. In 2008, she was named a People's Artist of Russia. By 2017, she earned the title of Austrian Kammersängerin, a special distinction for singers in Austria. She has also won multiple Echo Klassik Awards. Since 2003, she has been an exclusive artist for the recording label Deutsche Grammophon. Her cultural impact was further noted when she sang the Olympic Anthem in Russian during the 2014 Winter Olympics.

In 2022, Netrebko's career faced significant challenges due to political events. Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, she released a statement. She expressed opposition to the war but stated she disagreed with forcing individuals to voice political opinions. This position led to pressure from various performance institutions. Some organizations, such as the Metropolitan Opera, removed her from upcoming productions. The Bavarian State Opera also cancelled her scheduled engagements. Netrebko initially announced she would retire from concert life in March 2022. However, she later released another statement announcing her plans to resume public performances.
