Angioplasty

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Your body uses tubes called arteries and veins to move blood. Sometimes, these tubes get narrow or blocked. This often happens because of a buildup called plaque. This plaque is made of cholesterol. When it builds up, it makes it hard for blood to flow. This can cause chest pain, which is called angina.

Doctors use a special way to fix this. It is called angioplasty. This is a way to widen the tubes without a large surgery. It is a minimally invasive way to help blood move again.

To start, a doctor finds an access vessel. This is usually a large tube like the femoral artery in the leg. They use a technique called the Seldinger technique to enter the vessel. A thin wire is passed through the narrow spot. Then, a catheter with a tiny balloon is moved over the wire.

Doctors use X-rays to see the work in real time. This tool is called fluoroscopy. They use a special dye to make the vessels show up on the screen. Once the balloon is in place, they inflate it. The balloon can reach 75 to 500 times normal blood pressure. This forces the vessel walls to expand.

Sometimes, the plaque is very hard. This is called calcified plaque. If a balloon cannot open the vessel, doctors use other tools. One tool is called an atherectomy. This uses a spinning part to clear the hard buildup. Some use a diamond-encrusted burr for rotational atherectomy. Other tools use a laser to break up the plaque. These tools help prepare the vessel for the balloon. They make the path easier for the doctor to work on.

Doctors may also use a stent during the process. A stent is a small mesh tube. It stays inside the vessel to keep it open. This can help prevent the tube from narrowing again. Angioplasty can be used in many places. It can treat the heart, the legs, or even the kidneys. It can also be used for the carotid arteries in the neck. For some patients, doctors might choose bypass surgery instead. This is a different kind of surgery to move blood around the blockage.

After the procedure, most people stay in the hospital overnight. They might even go home the very next day. Doctors watch the patient's heart rate and blood pressure. They also check the spot where the tube entered the body. Patients can often walk within two to six hours. They may take medicine to help their arteries stay relaxed. This helps prevent spasms in the blood vessels. Most people find that their quality of life improves after the blood flows better.
