Andy Warhol was a transformative American artist and filmmaker.

He is widely considered the most important artist of the second half of the 20th century. As a leading figure in the pop art movement, he changed how we see art. His work explored the connections between advertising, consumerism, and celebrity culture. He turned everyday consumer goods into famous works of art. Warhol also challenged the traditional boundaries between high culture and low culture. He did this by embracing mechanical reproduction to create his pieces. He is also famous for popularizing the expression "15 minutes of fame."

Warhol used many different methods to create his art.

One of his most famous techniques was silkscreen printing. This process allowed him to create multiple versions of a single image. He also used a technique called the "blotted line" during his early career. This method combined aspects of printmaking and graphite drawing on paper. To create his drawings, he often used an epidiascope to project photographs. He would then trace the contours and add hatching to the shadows. This allowed him to transform a simple photograph into a stylized piece of art.

Warhol's career included many distinct stages and media. He began as a commercial artist for fashion magazines.

He produced many advertisements for magazines like Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. In the 1960s, he moved into fine art with famous works like Campbell's Soup Cans.

He also became an experimental filmmaker. He directed underground films like Chelsea Girls and Blue Movie. These films often featured his "Warhol superstars," a group of unique personalities. Later, he expanded into television with shows like Andy Warhol's Fifteen Minutes. He also wrote several books, including The Philosophy of Andy Warhol.

Warhol's journey began in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

He was born on August 6, 1928, to Rusyn immigrant parents. His father worked in a coal mine. When Warhol was eight, he suffered from a severe infection. This led to rheumatic fever and a neurological condition called Sydenham's chorea. While recovering in bed, he began drawing and making scrapbooks. His family even built a darkroom in their basement for his photography. He later studied commercial art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. In 1949, he moved to New York City to start his professional career.

He also managed the influential rock band the Velvet Underground. They performed at his multimedia events called the Exploding Plastic Inevitable.
