He served in this role from 1829 to 1837. Before his presidency, he was a prominent U.S. Army general. He also served in both houses of the U.S. Congress. Jackson is most famous for establishing Jacksonian democracy. This political philosophy changed how the American government functioned. It emphasized the power of the common white working man. However, his legacy remains deeply controversial among historians today.

Jackson's early life was defined by significant hardship and conflict. He was born on March 15, 1767, in the Carolinas. His father died only three weeks before his birth. During the American Revolutionary War, Jackson and his brothers joined the Patriot side.

They were captured by British forces in 1781. During this time, a British officer slashed Jackson with a sword. This left permanent scars on his head and left hand. His mother later died from cholera while nursing prisoners. These events fueled his lifelong dislike of aristocratic privilege.

As an adult, Jackson built a career in law and land. He studied law in North Carolina and moved to Tennessee.

He worked as a frontier lawyer and a judge. Jackson also engaged in land speculation and slave trading. He became a wealthy planter by owning a plantation called the Hermitage.

This wealth was built on the forced labor of hundreds of enslaved African Americans. He also married Rachel Donelson, though their marriage faced public scrutiny.

Jackson rose to national fame through his military leadership. He commanded the Tennessee militia during the Creek War of 1813–1814. He won the Battle of Horseshoe Bend during this conflict. This victory led to the Treaty of Fort Jackson. That treaty forced the Creek people to surrender large territories.

Later, he led forces during the First Seminole War. His actions helped lead to the acquisition of Florida from Spain. His most famous victory was at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. This win made him a massive national hero.

His path to the presidency involved intense political struggle. In 1824, Jackson won the most popular and electoral votes. However, he did not win a majority of the electoral votes. The House of Representatives instead elected John Quincy Adams.

Jackson's supporters called this a "corrupt bargain." This event helped form the modern Democratic Party. Jackson ran again in 1828 and won in a landslide victory.

This victory gave him a strong mandate to lead.

During his presidency, Jackson made several high-stakes decisions. In 1830, he signed the Indian Removal Act. This law forced tens of thousands of Native Americans from their homes. This displacement resulted in the Trail of Tears. Thousands of people died during this forced migration.

He also fought with the Second Bank of the United States. Jackson viewed the bank as an elite institution. He used his veto power to help dismantle it. He also faced a crisis when South Carolina threatened to nullify federal tariffs.

Jackson's presidency had unique economic and political impacts. He was the only U.S. president to pay off the national debt. He also worked to preserve the union of states. However, critics often labeled him a demagogue.

They argued he ignored the law to suit his goals. While early historical rankings were positive, his reputation has declined recently. Scholars continue to debate his role in shaping American democracy and its many injustices.
