He lived from 1766 to 1832. He was born in Chalon-sur-Saône. Later, he moved to Paris to work in the wine trade. He was a merchant who sold wine to others. Jullien was a pioneer in writing about wine. A writer named Hugh Johnson called his work the foundation for modern wine writing. He helped people understand how different wines compare to each other.

Jullien was a very clever inventor too.

He found ways to make the wine trade better. He invented a special air tube. This tube helped people tap wine more easily. He also made a powder to help clarify wine. Clarifying makes the liquid clear. These new ideas were very helpful to his work. He won gold medals at different exhibitions for these inventions. The minister Jean-Antoine Chaptal even supported him.

Jullien loved to travel to many far places.

He wanted to describe every known wine region. Most writers back then only wrote about growing vines. Jullien wanted to compare the wines themselves. He traveled to see vineyards on islands in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. He even looked at wine styles from the Hindu Kush. He traveled with a writer named Cyrus Redding in Germany. There, he wrote about the wines from the comet vintage of 1811.

In 1816, he published a huge book called Topographie de tous les vignobles connus.

This book was a massive catalog of the world's wine regions. He divided all wines into five different classes. This helped people choose which wines to buy. He wrote about many unique traditions. In Madeira, people bury oak barrels in pits. They leave them under horse manure for six months. He also wrote about Cossack winemaking in Ekaterinoslav.

His work changed how people saw famous wine areas.

He wrote about the wines of Bordeaux. He listed estates like Haut-Brion and Margaux as the very best. His rankings were very accurate. Nearly 40 years later, the official 1855 classification looked much like his list. He also wrote a manual for sommeliers in 1822. This book helped people learn how to care for wine. Jullien's son, C.E. Jullien, helped with later editions of his books. Jullien died in Paris in 1832 from cholera.
