It is described as being of a finer texture than the chaotic mass. Nous is unlimited and possesses all knowledge and power. Its primary manifestation in the physical world is Motion. This motion caused the separation of like from unlike parts. This process of segregation and arrangement created the distinct reality we see. Growth and decrease are simply the results of new aggregations or disruptions of these parts.

Anaxagoras also made groundbreaking observations in astronomy. He was the first to provide a correct explanation for eclipses. He believed the Sun was a mass of red-hot, blazing metal. He described the Sun as being larger than the Peloponnese. He also suggested that the Sun might be just another star. Regarding the Moon, he asserted it was an earthy body with mountains. He was among the first to claim the Moon reflects sunlight. He even speculated that the Moon might be inhabited. He also proposed the idea of panspermia. This is the notion that life exists throughout the universe and could be distributed everywhere.

His scientific views were often controversial. He claimed that heavenly bodies were masses of stone torn from the Earth. He believed they were ignited by their own rapid rotation.
