Anal hygiene

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Anal hygiene is the way people clean themselves after using the toilet. This practice is very important for public health. The main goal is to stop pathogens. Pathogens are tiny germs that can make people sick. Most people clean themselves right after they finish using the bathroom. Some people also clean themselves while they are taking a bath or a shower. Keeping this area clean helps prevent the spread of diseases.

There are two main ways that people stay clean. Many cultures use water to wash the area. This can happen with a pressurized jet device called a bidet. Some people use a handheld vessel like a lota or an aftabeh. These vessels pour water over the skin. In many cultures, people use only their left hand for this task. Other people use wiping methods. Most people in modern history use toilet paper to wipe.

People have used many different tools throughout history. The ancient Greeks used small pieces of ceramic to clean themselves. Ancient Romans used a sponge on a wooden stick. They would soak the sponge in a water channel. In ancient Japan, people used wooden skewers called shit sticks. Toilet paper first started to be used in ancient China around the 2nd century BC. Later, an American named Joseph Gayetty sold the first commercial rolls in 1857.

Different countries have special tools for staying clean. In Turkey, many toilets have a small nozzle called a taharet musluğu. This nozzle lets people wet their hands to wash. In the Arab world, many people use a bidet shower called a Shattaf. This was made popular by the Danube Group in the 1990s. In Japan, technology has made very advanced toilets. The first electronic bidet toilet was the INAX Sanitarina 61 in 1967.

Today, we see many different ways to handle hygiene. In Southeast Asia, people often use a plastic dipper. This tool is also used for bathing. In some parts of the world, people use leaves, mud, or even stones. This often happens when water is hard to find. In many Western countries, toilet paper is a very important item. People even bought extra rolls during the COVID-19 pandemic. No matter the method, staying clean is a key part of health.
