Amplitude

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Amplitude is a way to measure how much a wave changes. It tells us the size or strength of a signal.

For a signal that repeats, we look at the change in one single period. This could be a set amount of time or a set distance. For signals that do not repeat, we compare the size to a starting value. There are many ways to define amplitude. Most of these ways look at the difference between the highest and lowest values.

One common way to measure is called peak-to-peak amplitude. This measures the change from the very top to the very bottom. The highest point is called the peak. The lowest point is called the trough.

You can see these points clearly on a tool called an oscilloscope. When we talk about electricity, we often write this as Vpp. Another way is semi-amplitude, which is just half of the peak-to-peak value. Engineers also use root mean square, or RMS, to measure power. This method uses the square root of the average of the squares. It is very helpful for measuring the heat made by an electric signal.

Scientists have used these ideas for a long time. In 1971, a book by McGraw-Hill explained much about electrical engineering. In 1996, researchers studied how amplitude works with light. Astronomers also use amplitude to study the stars. They look for small changes in how stars move. This is called radial velocity semi-amplitude. Measuring these tiny wobbles helps them find exoplanets.

Different types of waves use different numbers. In sound waves, amplitude relates to the volume we hear. It can describe the air pressure in a wave. For light, the amplitude relates to the electric field. The square of the amplitude tells us the intensity of the wave.

In telecommunications, pulse amplitude can be voltage, current, or power. This is used to send information through wires or air. If you use a digital voltmeter, it might calculate the RMS for you. This helps make sure the measurement is correct for different wave shapes.

Amplitude also changes how we feel things like sound. An amplitude envelope describes how a sound changes over time. A steady tone has a constant amplitude. But some sounds have a percussive envelope. This means they start suddenly and then fade away.

Think of two wine glasses clinking together. Or think of hitting a drum or slamming a door. These sounds have a quick attack and then a decay. This helps our ears recognize the unique quality of the sound.
