Absolute value

math Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Imagine you are standing on a long, straight path. You decide to walk five steps forward. Then, you turn around and walk five steps backward. Even though you moved in different directions, you traveled the same total distance. In math, we use a special idea called absolute value to talk about this. It measures how far a number is from zero, without worrying about whether it is positive or negative.

This means the absolute value is always zero or a positive number. It focuses only on the size or magnitude of the number. For example, the absolute value of 3 is 3. The absolute value of -3 is also 3.

To show absolute value, mathematicians use specific symbols. In 1841, a man named Karl Weierstrass introduced two vertical bars. He wrote it like this: |x|. You might also see it written as abs(x) in computer programs or spreadsheets.

Some people also call it the numerical value or the magnitude. The term "modulus" also comes from this idea. Jean-Robert Argand used that word in 1806 to mean a unit of measure. This term was used in French and later borrowed into English. It is a helpful way to describe how big a value is.

Absolute value works in many different ways in math. For real numbers, it is the distance from zero on a number line. You can also use it to find the distance between any two numbers. This is called the absolute difference. If you take the absolute value of a difference, you find how far apart two points are.

The math follows four important rules. These rules include non-negativity and the triangle inequality. The triangle inequality says that the distance of two steps together is not less than one long step. These rules help math stay organized and predictable.

This idea can grow much larger than just a simple number line. It works for complex numbers, too. Complex numbers are not just on a line; they live on a flat plane. To find their absolute value, we measure the distance from a starting point called the origin.

We can calculate this using the Pythagorean theorem. This theorem helps us find the distance between points in a space. Because of this, absolute value is closely linked to the idea of a norm. A norm is a way to measure the size of things in different mathematical settings.

We can see absolute value in many places around us. It is part of how we study shapes and patterns. It helps us define how to measure distance in many-dimensional spaces. Scientists and mathematicians use it to understand how things change and move. It is even used in computer code to help machines do math. By focusing on distance rather than direction, absolute value helps us solve hard problems. It turns a simple idea about walking into a powerful tool for understanding the world.
