Ampere-hour

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An amp-hour is a way to measure electric charge. We use it to find battery capacity. Capacity tells us how much power a battery can hold.

One amp-hour is the charge from a steady flow of one ampere for one hour. This is the same as 3,600 seconds.

Many things use a smaller measure. It is called a milliampere-hour, or mAh. This is one-thousandth of an amp-hour. A small AA battery holds 2,000 to 3,000 mAh. Most smartphones hold between 2,500 and 6,000 mAh.

Big batteries hold much more. A car battery for a gas engine might have 50 amp-hours. This helps the car start. Some electric cars also use these measures. In 2013, a BMW i3 was named after its battery capacity. It had 60 amp-hours.

We can also use charge to make things. One amp-hour can make 0.336 grams of aluminium. To make one kilogram of aluminium, you need at least 2,980 amp-hours. This is done using a process called electroplating.
