The American Revolution was a massive political movement between 1765 and 1783. It occurred within the Thirteen Colonies of Great Britain. This movement started as a rebellion seeking reform. It eventually evolved into a full revolution. This revolution resulted in a complete separation from Britain. It replaced the old social and political order entirely. The movement created the sovereign United States of America.

Before the war, the colonies experienced a period called salutary neglect. This was an unofficial British policy. It allowed the colonies to govern themselves for a long time. Because of this, unique American identities began to form. They developed their own government systems and religious institutions. For example, Pennsylvania had the Frame of Government. New England had Congregational Protestantism. Some colonies even banned slavery early on. However, this period of autonomy changed after 1763.

Economic tension grew due to a system called mercantilism. Mercantilism is an economic policy where colonies exist for the mother country's benefit. Britain wanted to grow its own wealth and power. To do this, they passed several Navigation Acts starting in 1651. These acts restricted how the colonies could trade with other nations. For instance, certain goods like tobacco had to go to Britain. Other laws, like the Wool Act of 1698, regulated colonial industries. These restrictions often helped some local industries, like shipbuilding. However, they caused deep political friction for many others.

After the French and Indian War ended in 1763, Britain sought more control. They imposed new taxes to pay for wartime costs. They also transferred control of western lands to British officials. In 1765, the Stamp Act Congress met in New York City. They argued that taxation without representation violated their rights. Tensions flared again with the Townshend Acts in 1767. In 1770, the Boston Massacre occurred when British troops killed antagonists in Boston. Later, in 1773, the Sons of Liberty organized the Boston Tea Party. They dumped chests of taxed tea into Boston Harbor.

Resistance became organized through the First Continental Congress in 1774. Twelve of the Thirteen Colonies sent delegates to meet. By 1775, the Province of Georgia also joined. In August 1775, King George III proclaimed Massachusetts to be in rebellion. The war officially sparked during the Battles of Lexington and Concord. The Second Continental Congress then took charge as a provisional government. They established the Continental Army in 1775. They appointed George Washington as the commander-in-chief.

On July 4, 1776, the Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence. This document moved the movement from reform to full revolution. It claimed that "all men are created equal." The war continued for several more years. During this time, France entered the conflict to support the revolution. A major turning point happened in 1781 at the Siege of Yorktown. Washington led the Continental Army to capture General Cornwallis. This decisive victory caused the British government to negotiate.

The conflict ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1783. This treaty formalized American sovereignty. Britain ceded nearly all territory east of the Mississippi River. It also ceded land south of the Great Lakes. The United States became a federal republic. This was a new type of government based on a written constitution. It relied on principles like natural rights and equality under the law. The Constitution took effect in 1789. The Bill of Rights was later ratified in 1791.

The Revolution changed how people thought about power and rights. It established the concept of the consent of the governed. This means a government's power comes from its people. While there were significant democratic limitations at the time, the ideas were revolutionary. The new nation was built on the idea of universal natural rights. This system differed greatly from the monarchies of Europe. It set a new precedent for how modern nations could be organized.
