The way the show works is very exciting for viewers. First, a panel of judges listens to the singers. The judges critique how the contestants perform on stage. Then, the American viewers get to decide who stays and who goes. They vote using phones, the internet, or SMS text messages. This makes the audience feel like they are part of the journey. The show even added a special results show to help with different time zones.

This show has a very interesting history. It was created by Simon Fuller. The idea was based on a British show called Pop Idol. That show was inspired by a New Zealand competition called Popstars. At first, many American networks did not want to buy the idea. However, Rupert Murdoch of Fox decided to bring it to the United States. The first season aired on June 11, 2002.

This means many singers from the show reached the top of the music charts. For eight years in a row, it was a number one rated show. Even when it moved from Fox to ABC in 2018, people still watched.
