He was the first king of the Twelfth Dynasty. This was during a time called the Middle Kingdom. He was not born into a royal family. His parents were named Senusret and Nefret. Some scholars believe his mother came from a place called Ta-Seti. Others think she might have been from Nubia. He worked hard to make his rule feel official and strong.

To lead Egypt, Amenemhat I made several big changes. He moved the capital city from Thebes to a new place called Itjtawy. He also tried to bring back old ways of building. He used the pyramid style from much earlier times.

This was a way to show he was a true leader. He also helped the government become more centralized. This means the central leaders had more control over the land. He wanted to make the whole country work together again.

History tells us many things about how he came to power. He might have been a high official named Amenemhat before he was king. He served under a leader named Mentuhotep IV. Some people think he might have even taken the throne from him.

The pyramid was made of limestone and mudbrick. Because it was not built perfectly, it is now a ruined mound. He also had a temple named "High Amenemhat's beauty." We know his name from many old lists. For example, the Turin Canon says he ruled for 29 years. The Abydos king list also records his name.

His life ended in a very sudden way. Old Egyptian stories say he was assassinated. These stories suggest his own guards were involved in the plot. This happened while his son, Senusret I, was away on a campaign. Amenemhat I was the first king to rule alongside his son. This helped Senusret I prepare to become the next great pharaoh. His family and his work helped start a very famous dynasty.

He was the first king of the Twelfth Dynasty. This era belonged to a period known as the Middle Kingdom. He was not born into a royal family. His parents were Senusret and Nefret. Some scholars believe his mother was from the Upper Egyptian nome of Ta-Seti. Other experts suggest she may have been of Nubian origin. His rise to power changed the direction of Egyptian history.

How Amenemhat I became king is a subject of much debate. He may have been a vizier, which is a high-ranking official. This official served under the previous ruler, Mentuhotep IV. Some scholars think Amenemhat I might have overthrown Mentuhotep IV. Others believe there was a co-regency, where both men ruled together. A co-regency is when two leaders share power at once. An inscription on a bowl from El-Lisht shows both names. This might suggest they ruled together to make the transition of power smoother.

To strengthen his rule, Amenemhat I made several strategic changes. He moved the capital from Thebes to a new city called Itjtawy. He also worked to centralize the government. This means he brought more control to the central leaders. He used his Horus name, Wehemmesu, to signal a rebirth. This name alluded to the Old Kingdom period. He emulated the artistic styles and monuments of that earlier age. This was an attempt to legitimize his authority through tradition.

Amenemhat I also left a mark through his architecture. He built a large pyramid at El-Lisht.

The structure had a core made of limestone blocks and mudbrick. He even used decorated blocks taken from Old Kingdom monuments. The pyramid was encased in fine limestone blocks. Beside the pyramid, he built a mortuary temple. He named it "High Amenemhat's beauty." This temple was smaller than those built in earlier dynasties. It was built on a lower level than the pyramid itself.

Historians use many ancient records to study his reign. The Turin Canon lists his reign as lasting 29 years. The Abydos king list includes his praenomen, Sehetep-ib-re, as the fifty-ninth entry. His name also appears in the Karnak King List. The Saqqara Tablet places him as the fifteenth entry. Even the ancient writer Manetho mentioned him in his work, the Aegyptiaca. These various lists help us piece together the timeline of the Middle Kingdom.

His family life was also important for the dynasty. He had a wife named Neferitatjenen. They had a son named Senusret I, who became the next pharaoh.

Amenemhat I was the first king to establish a co-regency with his son. A double-dated stele from Abydos shows this arrangement. It records the 30th year of Amenemhat I and the 10th year of Senusret I. He also had three daughters named Neferu III, Neferusherit, and Kayet. These family connections helped ensure a stable succession.

Ancient literature provides a dramatic look at his end. The *Instructions of Amenemhat* and the *Story of Sinuhe* tell of his death. These texts suggest he was assassinated by his own guards. This conspiracy reportedly happened while Senusret I was away on a military campaign in Libya.
