In 54 BCE, Roman soldiers arrived in the land. They needed food to eat. The local crops were not good that year. The Romans took food from the Eburones. This made the people very angry. Ambiorix led a fight against the Roman army.

Ambiorix used a trick to win. He told the Romans a big army was coming. He said they should leave their camp. The Romans trusted him and moved. Then, the Eburones attacked the Roman troops.
