The amaryllis is a beautiful plant from South Africa.

It grows from a bulb in the ground. Most amaryllis grow in the rocky southwest part of the country. People call them naked ladies. This is because the flowers grow after the green leaves die.

The flowers grow on tall, leafless stems. One bulb can make two stems. Each stem holds a cluster of two to twelve flowers. The flowers are funnel-shaped. They are usually white with red veins. Sometimes they are pink or purple. Many insects visit these flowers. Carpenter bees are the main pollinators. A pollinator is a helper that helps plants make seeds. Moths also visit the flowers at night.

In the wild, these plants live in bushy areas called fynbos. Sometimes bush fires help them grow. Fire clears away thick plants so the amaryllis can find light. The seeds are heavy and large. Strong winds shake the seeds loose. They fall to the ground and grow when the winter rains come.
