He was a psychiatrist and a neuropathologist. A neuropathologist is a doctor who studies diseases of the nervous system. He was very interested in how the brain works. He also studied brain tumors and epilepsy. His work helps us understand why some people lose their memory. This is a very important part of medical history.

In 1901, Alzheimer studied a patient named Auguste Deter. She was 51 years old and had trouble with her short-term memory.

When she died in 1906, Alzheimer looked closely at her brain. He used a new method called the Bielschowsky stain. This special way of coloring the tissue helped him see tiny things. He found amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. These are small growths inside the brain cells. These findings helped identify a specific type of brain disease.

Alzheimer grew up in a town called Marktbreit in Bavaria.

He was born on 14 June 1864. His father worked in a notary office. Later, his family moved to Aschaffenburg for his education. Alzheimer studied medicine at three different universities. He went to the University of Berlin and the University of Tübingen. Finally, he studied at the University of Würzburg. He became a Doctor of Medicine in 1887.

Many important events happened during his career. In 1903, he moved to Munich to work with Emil Kraepelin. Kraepelin was a very famous psychiatrist and a mentor to Alzheimer. In 1906, Alzheimer shared his discovery at a meeting in Tübingen. At first, the other doctors did not seem interested. In 1910, Kraepelin named the condition Alzheimer's disease in his textbook. This helped doctors in Europe and the US recognize it. By 1912, Alzheimer became a professor in Breslau.

We can see his impact through the names we use today. Even though he died young, his work lives on in science. He died on 19 December 1915 at the age of 51. He had been suffering from health problems after a bad infection. He is buried in the Frankfurt Main Cemetery.
