Ayana is a devout Christian and speaks both Oromo and Amharic. Her career has seen her reach the highest levels of international athletics.

To succeed in long-distance running, an athlete must master specific race distances. Ayana specializes in the 5,000 metres and the 10,000 metres on the track. She also competes in much longer events like the half marathon and the marathon. In a 5,000 metre race, runners maintain a very high speed for several minutes. The 10,000 metre race requires even more stamina as it covers a greater distance.

Success in these events depends on a runner's ability to manage their pace and execute strategic moves during the race.

Ayana's competitive rise began in her early twenties. At age 21, she earned a bronze medal in the 5,000 metres at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow. In 2014, she demonstrated her growing strength at the African Championships in Marrakesh. There, she defeated the favorite, Genzebe Dibaba, to win the title in a championship record time of 15:32.72.

Just one month later, she won the 5,000 metres at the Continental Cup by more than 24 seconds.

The year 2015 marked a major turning point in her career. At the World Championships in Beijing, Ayana won her first world title in the 5,000 metres. She used a strategy of front-running to win the final in 14:26.83. This performance set a new championship record and beat the silver medalist by over 17 seconds.

She finished with a world record time of 29:17.45. This time was 14 seconds faster than the previous record held by Wang Junxia since 1993. Because of her dominance, she was voted the IAAF Female World Athlete of the Year in 2016.

Her dominance continued into the 2017 World Championships in London. Ayana won the gold medal in the 10,000 metres with a time of 30:16.32. This was a massive victory, as she finished 46 seconds ahead of the runner-up. This margin set the record for the largest victory in a 10,000m World Championship.

She also secured a silver medal in the 5,000 metres just eight days later. These achievements placed her high on the world all-time lists for both distances.

Ayana's career has also been defined by her resilience. She took a break from professional racing for nearly three years. This period was due to injuries and her pregnancy. However, she made a successful comeback starting in April 2022. In October 2022, she ran the Amsterdam Marathon. She completed her marathon debut in 2:17:20, which was the fastest ever for a woman at that time.
