earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Alluvium is a special kind of earth. It is made of loose bits like clay, silt, sand, or gravel. These bits are moved by running water.

You can find it in stream beds or on beaches. It also forms in an alluvial fan. An alluvial fan is a shape made by spreading sediment. This material is very important for the land. It can cover the hard bedrock underneath.

Water works like a moving belt for land. It picks up tiny pieces of earth and carries them away. When the water slows down, it drops these pieces. This creates a layer of sediment. This layer is often called a floodplain alluvium. These areas can be highly fertile. This means the soil is great for growing plants. This rich soil helped some of the earliest human civilizations.

People have used different names for this for a long time. In 1690, Antoine Furetière used the word alluvion. He defined it as new land made by water. In the 1800s, people called some of it diluvium. They thought it came from a great flood. Later, geologists stopped using that old idea. They began to call those older layers older alluvium instead.

Alluvium is usually geologically young. Most of it is from the Quaternary age. Some of it is also from the Pliocene age. You can find Pliocene alluvium in parts of Idaho. There is also Miocene age alluvium in California. This is found in the San Joaquin River valley. These layers are often called cover. This is because they hide the bedrock below.

Think about how a river works in your own life. You might see a river carrying mud after rain. That mud is part of the same thing. Alluvium is not solid rock yet. It stays loose and soft. It is different from sediments in deep seas or lakes. It must be moved by running water to be called alluvium. This makes it a key part of how rivers shape our world.
