Oxygen can take many different forms. These forms are called allotropes.

The most common form is dioxygen. This is the oxygen gas in our air. It is a clear gas. Living things use it to get power. When we cool it down, it turns into a pale blue liquid. This liquid is attracted to magnets.

Another form is ozone. Ozone is a pale blue gas. It is very reactive. In the sky, ozone acts like a shield. It protects life from the sun's rays. Near the ground, ozone can be a pollutant. It can be harmful to people with lung problems.

There is also atomic oxygen. This is made of single atoms. These atoms like to bond with things quickly. On Earth, they do not last long. But in space, they are very common. Scientists have found them on Mars too.

Oxygen can even be a solid. There are six different solid phases. One kind is a dark red color. Another kind can act like a metal. This happens under very high pressure. At low temperatures, this metal form can conduct power without losing it.
