Alien is a 1979 science fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott.
It is a story about a commercial space tug called the Nostromo. The crew of seven members is traveling back to Earth in stasis, which is a state of deep sleep. During their voyage, the ship's computer, known as "Mother," detects a transmission from a nearby planet. Following company policy, the crew investigates the signal to find signs of intelligent life. This decision leads them to a derelict alien vessel and a deadly extraterrestrial creature. The film is widely considered one of the most influential movies in the science fiction and horror genres.
The plot follows a sequence of dangerous events on the Nostromo. After landing on a planet, members of the crew find a massive, fossilized alien corpse. One crew member, Kane, enters a chamber filled with hundreds of large eggs. An arthropod-like lifeform emerges from an egg and attaches to his face. Although the crew attempts to help, they discover the creature has highly corrosive, acidic blood. This blood is dangerous enough to damage the ship's hull. Later, the creature matures and escapes from Kane, beginning a hunt through the ship's air ducts.
As the crew tries to survive, the story reveals deeper conflicts. The character Ripley discovers a secret company directive through the Mother computer. The directive states that the science officer, Ash, must return with the alien for study. This instruction exists regardless of the risk to the human crew. It is eventually revealed that Ash is not human, but an android. The crew faces several deaths as the alien hunts them through the ship. To escape, Ripley must initiate a self-destruct sequence on the Nostromo. She eventually manages to escape in a shuttle, using a grappling hook gun and the ship's engines to blast the creature into space.
Many artists contributed to the unique look of the film. Swiss artist H. R. Giger designed the alien creatures and their environments. Concept artists Ron Cobb and Chris Foss designed the other sets. To make the alien look realistic, the production cast Bolaji Badejo. Badejo was a 26-year-old design student with a very slender frame. His height and thinness helped create the illusion that the creature's limbs were too long to be human. Stuntmen Eddie Powell and Roy Scammell also performed as the alien in certain scenes.
The production of the film involved several key creative figures. Dan O'Bannon wrote the screenplay based on a story by himself and Ronald Shusett. O'Bannon had previously worked on a science fiction comedy called Dark Star. He wanted to create a version of that idea that focused on horror instead of comedy. The cast included several notable actors. Tom Skerritt played Captain Dallas, and Sigourney Weaver played the warrant officer, Ripley. Weaver's performance in this film was her first leading role and helped launch her career. Other cast members included John Hurt as Kane and Ian Holm as the android Ash.

The film won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. It also earned a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation and three Saturn Awards. These awards recognized the direction of Ridley Scott and the performances of the cast.
The legacy of the film extends far beyond its original release. It spawned a massive media franchise including sequels like Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien Resurrection. There are also crossover films with the Predator franchise, known as Alien vs. Predator. The film's importance was recognized by the Library of Congress in 2002. It was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being culturally and historically significant. In 2008, the American Film Institute ranked it as the seventh-best film in the science fiction genre. Today, the film remains a cornerstone of modern cinematic storytelling.
