It specializes in several key sectors, including e-commerce, retail, and the internet. The company operates through a diverse portfolio of businesses across the globe. These businesses provide services like cloud computing and digital media. They also manage complex logistics networks to move goods around the world. Alibaba is recognized as one of the most valuable corporations on Earth. It currently holds a position among the top 10 most valuable companies globally.

The company operates through three primary types of sales models. First, it manages business-to-business (B2B) services through Alibaba.com. This platform helps enterprises, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, trade with one another. Second, it operates business-to-consumer (B2C) services via Tmall. This model connects brands directly to individual shoppers. Third, it runs consumer-to-consumer (C2C) services through Taobao.

This allows individual people to sell items to other individuals. By mastering these different channels, Alibaba has become one of the largest retailers in the world.

Alibaba's history began on June 28, 1999, in Hangzhou, China. Jack Ma founded the company in his apartment alongside 17 friends and students. They initially focused on creating a B2B marketplace to help Chinese companies export products. In October 1999, the company secured a US$25 million investment from several groups. These included SoftBank, Goldman Sachs, and the Swedish Wallenberg family's Investor AB. By 2002, Alibaba.com had become a profitable business. Following this success, Ma launched new services like Taobao and Alipay to expand the ecosystem.

Growth was driven by intense competition and strategic expansion. In 2003, eBay announced it was expanding into the Chinese market. Jack Ma rejected a buyout offer from eBay for his subsidiary, Taobao. Instead, Alibaba used existing technologies to gain trust in the Chinese market. They even dominated the market at a loss to attract more consumers. This strategy eventually forced eBay to close its unprofitable China unit.

This period established Alibaba as a dominant force in global e-commerce.

The company reached a historic milestone in September 2014. Alibaba launched its initial public offering (IPO) on the New York Stock Exchange. This IPO raised US$25 billion, making it the largest in world history at that time.

The offering was larger than the IPOs of Google, Facebook, and Twitter combined. By January 2018, Alibaba became the second Asian company to exceed a US$500 billion valuation. In 2020, the company was also ranked as the fifth-largest artificial intelligence company. These numbers show the massive scale of Alibaba's economic influence.

Alibaba's influence extends into many different industries and global events. For example, the company signed an $800 million deal to sponsor the Olympic Games.

It also invests in international infrastructure, such as Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor. In the retail sector, Alibaba has expanded into physical stores through partnerships with companies like Wanda Group. They even invested in the American ride-sharing service, Lyft. Even in sports, the company bought a 50% stake in Guangzhou Evergrande F.C. in 2014. This shows how the company moves far beyond just the internet.

Recently, the company has undergone significant structural and regulatory changes. In March 2023, Alibaba announced its "1+6+N" restructuring plan. This plan reorganized the company into six independent business entities. These include the Cloud Intelligence Group and the Cainiao Smart Logistics Network.

Each unit now has its own CEO and board of directors. This change happened after a period of intense regulatory scrutiny from Chinese authorities. In 2021, the State Administration for Market Regulation issued a $2.8 billion fine for anti-competitive practices. This restructuring aims to allow each part of the company to seek its own funding and growth.
