Algaculture

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Algaculture is the special way people farm tiny or large plants in water. Most of the algae being farmed are microalgae, which are also called phytoplankton. These are so small you cannot see them without help. Some people also farm macroalgae, which we usually call seaweed.

This kind of farming is very important for our future. It helps create a healthy and sustainable food system for everyone. Algae can also help the Earth by absorbing carbon dioxide. This process is called carbon sequestration, and it helps fight global warming.

Growing algae requires a careful balance of light, water, and nutrients. Most algae use a process called autotrophic growth. This means they use light, water, and carbon dioxide to make glucose and oxygen. Some types use heterotrophic growth, which means they eat sugars instead of using light.

To keep the plants healthy, farmers must manage the water temperature. Most algae like water between 15°C and 35°C. Because light only reaches the top of deep water, farmers must keep the water moving. They use paddle wheels or air bubbles to stir the algae around. This helps every plant get the light it needs to grow.

People have used seaweed as fertilizer for many centuries. Today, we use algae for much more than just gardening. We use it to make food, medicines, and even bioplastics. Some algae make agar, which is a gel used to thicken food. Irish moss is used to make carrageenan for ice cream and puddings.

Scientists are even looking at algae to make new fuels. They are studying how to turn algae into gasoline or biogas. Some researchers are even trying to use algae to make meat substitutes like vegan burgers. This is possible because scientists can change the flavor and nutrients in a lab.

There are many different kinds of algae that people enjoy. In Japan, people eat purple laver called nori. In Ireland and Canada, people eat a red algae called dulse. Spirulina is a blue-green microalgae that is very high in protein. It has been used as food for a long time in East Africa and Mexico.

In Scotland, people add sea lettuce to their soups and salads. Some algae are even used to make healthy oils. These oils have Omega-3, which is good for your brain and helps with aging. There are so many varieties that each one has a special use.

Farming algae is growing very fast all over the world. In 1995, the world produced 13.5 million tonnes of aquatic plants. By 2022, that number grew to 37.8 million tonnes.

Many different countries are leading this growth. China is a very large producer, followed by Malaysia and the Philippines. The United Republic of Tanzania and the Russian Federation are also important. This growth shows how much we rely on these tiny plants. As we learn more, algae will likely become a bigger part of our lives.
