Wallace's early life provided the foundation for his curious mind. He was born on 8 January 1823, in Llanbadoc, Monmouthshire. He was the eighth of nine children in his family. His father was of Scottish ancestry and worked in law and property. Wallace attended Hertford Grammar School until he was 14 years old. He later moved to London to work as an apprentice builder. While in London, he attended lectures at the London Mechanics Institute. This exposure to new ideas helped shape his future scientific thinking.
His professional path involved several different roles before his famous travels. Between 1840 and 1843, he worked as a land surveyor. This outdoor work allowed him to collect plants as an amateur botanist. In 1844, he taught drawing and mapmaking in Leicester. During this time, he read many influential books in the local library. He studied works by Charles Lyell and Charles Darwin. He also met the entomologist Henry Walter Bates. Bates encouraged Wallace to begin collecting insects, which became a major part of his career.
Wallace faced significant hardships during his many expeditions. In 1852, while returning from South America, his ship's cargo caught fire. 
Beyond biology, Wallace was a dedicated social activist. He was critical of the social and economic systems in 19th-century Britain. He was also one of the first scientists to worry about human impact on the environment. Wallace even looked toward the stars in his later years. In 1904, he wrote *Man's Place in the Universe*. This book was a serious attempt to evaluate if life existed on other planets. He was among the first scientists to explore the possibility of life on Mars.
