He wrote poems, stories, and plays. He was born in Wolverhampton, England. As a boy, he lived in Wales. The sea and mountains there inspired his work.

Noyes wrote many books of poetry. One of his most loved poems is "The Highwayman." In 1995, many people in Britain voted it a favorite. He also wrote a long poem called "Drake." This poem tells the story of a sea leader named Sir Francis Drake.

Noyes had strong feelings about peace. He was a pacifist, which means he hated war. He wrote poems to show the horror of fighting. One famous poem is "The Victory Ball." He wrote it after seeing people dance after a war ended. He wondered if the dead soldiers would be sad to see the dancing. He wrote that graves were under the dancers' feet.

Noyes spent much time in America. He taught at Princeton University for a while. His students included the writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. He loved his wife, Garnett. They are buried together in a single grave.
