Alexander Vladimirovich Zakharchenko was a prominent pro-Russian separatist leader. He served as the head of state and prime minister of the Donetsk People's Republic, or DPR. The DPR was a self-proclaimed state that declared independence from Ukraine on May 11, 2014. This group was backed by Russia and acted as a rebel movement. Zakharchenko became a central figure in the conflict within the Donbas region. His leadership shaped the political landscape of the area for several years.

Before his political rise, Zakharchenko worked in the industrial sector. He graduated from a technical college and worked as a mine electrician. He eventually opened a business within the mining industry. He also studied at the law institute of the Interior Ministry. In December 2013, he became the head of the Donetsk branch of OPLOT. OPLOT was a pro-Russian militant organization founded by Yevgeny Zhilin in Kharkiv.

Zakharchenko's transition to political power was marked by rapid military and civil actions. On April 16, 2014, he and 20 members of OPLOT occupied the Donetsk City Council offices. They used clubs and rifles to demand a referendum on the region's status. By May 2014, he led an insurgency against the central government of Ukraine. On August 7, 2014, he succeeded Alexander Borodai as the DPR prime minister. Some sources suggest his appointment was part of a Russian effort to present the uprising as a grassroots movement.

During his leadership, Zakharchenko participated in high-level diplomacy and intense combat. In September 2014, he acted as the lead negotiator for the Minsk Protocol. This agreement was a peace plan intended to end the war in Donbas. In February 2015, he also agreed to the Minsk II peace treaty. However, he remained a hardline figure during these negotiations. He stated he would not follow a ceasefire in the Debaltseve region if terms were violated. During the Battle of Debaltseve in February 2015, he was wounded in the leg.

Zakharchenko held strong political and social views throughout his career. He campaigned on the promise of higher pensions for his citizens. He compared the wealth of Donetsk to the United Arab Emirates due to its coal and gas. He also expressed nostalgic views regarding the Soviet Union, citing its education and healthcare. On social issues, he stated that certain modern family structures were unacceptable. He also expressed support for the death penalty. In 2016, the writer Zak Prilepin published a book where Zakharchenko was the main character.

His administration was also associated with serious human rights concerns. During the war, there were many reports of forced disappearances in the DPR. Zakharchenko claimed his forces detained several Ukrainian subversives every day. By December 11, 2014, it was estimated that 632 people were held in illegal detention by separatist forces. One notable case involved journalist Stanislav Aseyev, who was abducted in June 2017. Amnesty International demanded his release, and he was eventually freed in 2019.

Zakharchenko's life ended due to a violent incident in August 2018. On August 31, 2018, a bomb exploded at the "Separ" café on Pushkin Boulevard in Donetsk. The explosion killed Zakharchenko and wounded the DPR finance minister, Alexander Timofeyev.
