He studied physical culture at a college in Yerevan. From 1979 to 1983, he worked as a teacher. He was also a writer who loved books. He even joined a group called the Writers Union of Armenia. In 1986, he published his first book called Bread Temptation. These early years shaped the man he would become.

In the late 1980s, a big conflict began in the region. This was a fight over a place called Nagorno-Karabakh.

Sargsyan led volunteer groups to help protect the area. He helped create a special military unit in September 1990. This unit had 2,300 men and 26 platoons. It was the first formal military group for Armenia. After Armenia became independent, he became the first Defence Minister. He worked hard to make the army strong and professional.

Sargsyan played a huge role in the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. He helped manage military actions until a ceasefire in 1994.

During the war, Armenian forces took control of many areas. Sargsyan also started a group for 5,000 war veterans. This group was called Yerkrapah. Because of the army, Sargsyan became very powerful in politics. He helped choose different leaders for the country over many years. He even helped Robert Kocharyan become president.

In 1999, Sargsyan reached a very high position. He became the Prime Minister of Armenia on June 11.

Sargsyan responded by leading Armenian volunteer groups near the border. In September 1990, he helped establish the Special Regiment. This unit consisted of 2,300 men organized into 26 platoons. It served as the first formal military unit independent from Moscow.\n\nFollowing Armenia's independence, Sargsyan became the first Defence Minister in December 1991. He played a vital role during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War.

In March 1992, he stated that Armenia required a 30,000-strong army to ensure security. Under his leadership, Armenian forces achieved major successes, such as capturing Shushi and Lachin. When Azerbaijani forces advanced in the north, Sargsyan called for a volunteer unit named \"Eagles Sentenced to Death.\" This battalion helped turn the course of the war in favor of the Armenian side. By the time a ceasefire was reached in 1994, Armenian forces controlled most of Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts.\n\nAfter the war, Sargsyan transitioned from a military leader to a powerful political figure. He founded Yerkrapah, a union of 5,000 war veterans.
