These included the botanist Carl Ludwig Willdenow and the physician Marcus Herz. Humboldt studied finance at the University of Frankfurt. He later studied geology at the Freiberg School of Mines in 1791. He also studied anatomy, astronomy, and foreign languages. These varied studies gave him the tools needed for scientific exploration.

While working as a mine inspector in Prussia, Humboldt showed great leadership. He was very successful at increasing gold ore production. He also cared deeply about the welfare of the miners. Humboldt used his own money to open a free school for them. He also established an emergency relief fund for workers who had accidents.
