He was born in 1884. For many years, Jamaica was ruled by Great Britain. Bustamante wanted to change this. He became a voice for workers. He led a group called the Jamaica Labour Party. This group helped people fight for their rights. In 1944, more people were finally allowed to vote.

Bustamante worked to make Jamaica an independent nation. This means the island would rule itself. On August 6, 1962, Jamaica became independent. Bustamante became the very first prime minister. This is the top leader of a country.

He was a strong and tough leader. Some people in his government were not kind to the Rastafari group. In 1963, many Rastafarians were arrested or killed during a raid.
