He was a pioneer in the study of electricity. He also discovered the gas we call methane. His work changed how we understand power. This discovery helped start the field of electrochemistry. Today, we even use his name for a unit of electric potential. We call it the volt to honor him.

Volta created the first electric battery.

He called this invention the voltaic pile. It worked by using two different metals. He used zinc and copper for his experiments. He placed these metals in a liquid called an electrolyte. This liquid could be saltwater or sulphuric acid. The chemical reaction between the metals and the liquid created a steady flow of electricity. This proved that electricity could be made from chemicals.

Volta's big ideas came from many experiments.

He studied how gases work in the late 1700s. He found methane in the marshes of Angera near Lake Maggiore. He also studied how electricity moves through objects. This is called electrical capacitance. He showed that charge and potential are linked. This discovery is known as Volta's Law of Capacitance. His work helped people understand how energy is stored.

Volta lived a very busy and successful life.

He was born in Como, Italy, in 1745. He taught at the University of Pavia for nearly 40 years. His classes were so popular that a new building was made for them. This building is called the Aula Volta. Even Napoleon Bonaparte admired his work. The emperor even made Volta a count in 1810. Volta died in 1827 at the age of 82.

We see Volta's impact all around us today.

Most modern batteries are based on his early ideas. His name is also found in nature. An electric eel species was named after him. Scientists even used his name for a new computer part in 2017. You can visit museums in Como to see his tools. These tools show how he changed our world forever.
