Alcalá de Henares is a major municipality in the Community of Madrid, located in central Spain.
It sits within the southern half of the Inner Plateau on the Henares River valley. The Henares is a tributary of the Jarama, which eventually flows into the Tagus River. The city occupies an area of approximately 88 square kilometers. As of 2018, the population reached 193,751 people. This makes it the third-most populated municipality in its region. Much of the modern housing sits on the north bank of the river.
The physical geography of the area is defined by the river's path. The north bank features a very flat relief. It consists of quaternary fluvial terraces, which are flat lands formed by river deposits. In contrast, the left or southern bank is quite different. It features a very steep slope made of Miocene clays. These slopes rise rapidly toward the moors of La Alcarria. The city sits at an average altitude of 654 meters. Historically, the urban area was bounded by the river and the Madrid-Barcelona railway. However, population growth has caused the city to sprawl toward the A-2 motorway.
The climate in this part of the Iberian Peninsula is classified as semi-arid. This means the environment experiences significant dry periods. The average temperature throughout the year is 14 °C. Winters are typically cold and dry, with temperatures occasionally dropping below 0 °C in December and January. Summers are very hot and dry. In July and August, temperatures can exceed 40 °C. Most of the annual rainfall, which averages about 300 mm, occurs during the spring and autumn.
The history of the site spans from the Chalcolithic phase of the Bronze Age. The Romans conquered the territory in the 1st century BC. They established a town called Complutum near a previous settlement known as Iplacea. The name Complutum means "confluence," referring to where waters flow together.
At its height, Complutum had 10,000 inhabitants and functioned as a municipium. It was a vital location on the Roman road between Emerita Augusta and Caesaraugusta. By the late 5th century, the Roman center began to decline. The population became more rural and dispersed into smaller settlements like the Campus Laudabilis.
Following the Islamic conquest, the area became part of the Middle March of al-Andalus. Berber lineages, such as the Banu Salim, controlled this territory. They built a citadel known as Qal'at Abd'Al-Salam on the left bank of the Henares. The name Alcalá is actually a derivative of the Arabic word "al-qal'a," meaning citadel.
After the Christian conquest in 1118, the urban center shifted back to the right bank. For centuries, the town was a seigneurial estate belonging to the archbishops of Toledo. This period saw a diverse population, including Jewish and Mudéjar communities. By 1292, the Jewish aljama consisted of approximately 750 people. During the 15th century, the local Jewish community grew to about 200 families.
A major transformation occurred in the 16th century under the patronage of Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros. He helped establish the University of Alcalá, turning the city into a famous college town.
This institution became a primary center for Renaissance learning. One of its most significant achievements was the production of the Complutensian Polyglot Bible in 1517. This polyglot Bible was the first of many similar works produced during the revival of Biblical studies. The university also encouraged the study of Hebrew. While the ancient institution moved to Madrid in 1836, a new Universidad de Alcalá was founded in 1977.
The city remains notable for its unique religious and architectural landmarks. The Magistral Cathedral of Saint Justus and Saint Pastor is a rare example of its kind. It is one of only two churches in the world to hold the title of "Magistral." This title means its canons are required to be doctors in Theology.
The historical center of the city is so significant that it is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The architectural style of the university has even influenced schools far away. For example, the University of San Diego and parts of Texas Tech University use models based on Alcalá's architecture.
