This bridge is a very important piece of history. It shows how people built strong paths long ago. It has stood for many hundreds of years.

Building this bridge was a big job. It was a deck arch bridge made of stone. This means the road sits on top of arches.

The bridge has six arches in total. These arches have different widths. They span across the river from one side to the other. The stone helps the bridge hold up heavy weight. This design keeps the bridge strong against the water.

Roman leaders ordered the bridge to be built. Emperor Trajan gave the order in 98 AD. Workers built it between 104 and 106 AD. The bridge was made in the province of Lusitania.

Twelve local towns helped pay for the work. An inscription on the bridge honors Trajan. It also says a man named Lacer built it with skill. The stone says the bridge will last forever.

Many wars have damaged the bridge over time. In 1214, the Moors destroyed a small arch. People rebuilt it in 1543 using old stone. In 1760, the Spanish broke an arch to stop an advance.

In 1809, Wellington's forces blew up part of it. Later, the Carlists destroyed much of the bridge in 1836. It was finally rebuilt in 1860 using mortared masonry. In 1969, workers fixed the main pillars near the dam.

You can see how the bridge connects the past to today. It is much shorter now than it was at first. Modern tools helped fix the pillars in 1969. This was possible because the José María de Oriol Dam helped drain the river.

Today, the bridge still stands as a great landmark. It reminds us of the Roman people and their skill. It shows how humans can repair things even after many wars.
