Al-Nabigha was a famous poet from long ago. His real name was Ziyad ibn Muawiyah. In Arabic, his name means genius or intelligent. He lived in Arabia before the time of Islam. He spent much of his life at royal courts. He worked for leaders in places called al-Hirah and Ghassan.

Al-Nabigha wrote many kinds of poems. He wrote eulogies to praise people. He also wrote satires to mock others. Some of his poems were about fights between groups. These groups were the Banu Abs and the Banu Dhubyan. His tribe was the Banu Dhubyan.

He was a very skilled writer. He is one of six great poets from that time. People collected his poems before the middle of the 2nd century of Islam. Some writers think he was the very first of those six. His work became a standard for Arabic poetry.

We do not know all his religious beliefs. He may have believed in one God. He wrote poems that praised the Christian Ghassanid kings. He said God helped the king. Some think his words show the kings had a holy book from God.
