He is most famous for illustrating the Kalevala. This is the national epic poem of Finland. His artwork helped define the Finnish national identity. He used his talent to turn ancient stories into visual masterpieces. His work remains a vital part of Finland's cultural history.

Gallen-Kallela mastered many different artistic techniques. He studied painting in major cities like Paris. He also learned how to create frescoes. A fresco is a large painting made directly on a wall. He studied these methods in Florence and Pompeii. In London, he also learned about stained glass. These varied skills allowed him to work on massive scales. He could decorate entire buildings with his vision.

His artistic style changed significantly throughout his life. Early in his career, he painted romantic scenes. He often focused on the Kalevala and landscapes. However, his style shifted toward symbolism by 1894. After the death of his daughter, Impi Marjatta, his work became more aggressive. He produced famous, intense paintings during this period. These included "The Defense of the Sampo" and "Kullervo's Curse."

After his father died in 1879, Akseli began formal studies. He moved to Paris in 1884 to study at the Académie Julian. He later married Mary Helena Slöör in 1890. They had three children: Impi, Kirsti, and Jorma.

He was a true explorer of the world. In 1909, he moved his family to Nairobi, Kenya. He was the first Finnish artist to paint south of the Sahara. During this time, he created over 150 expressionistic works. These paintings were known for their remarkable color synergy.
