Aircraft fairing

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An aircraft fairing is a special structure on a plane. Its main job is to create a smooth outline. This helps to reduce drag. Drag is the force that slows a plane down.

Fairings act as covers for gaps and spaces. They hide the areas between different parts of the aircraft. This makes the plane look better too. Using fairings helps reduce form drag and interference drag.

Fairings work by smoothing out how air moves. Air flows more easily over a smooth shape. For example, a wing root fairing smooths the area where the wing meets the fuselage.

This reduces interference drag. On the wing, small rounded edges reduce friction. At the front and back, larger shapes smooth out pressure differences. High pressure sits at the edges. Low pressure sits on top of the wing. Some fairings, like flap track fairings, even move. They enclose the parts that move the flaps when they are up.

Many different types of fairings exist for different parts. A belly fairing sits on the underside of the plane. It can cover fuel tanks or cargo storage. A cockpit fairing is often called a pod. These are common on ultralight trikes and protect the crew.

You might also see a spinner on a propeller hub. This makes the hub more streamlined. Tail cones are used at the very back of the fuselage. They remove the base area to stop base drag.

There are many names for these parts depending on where they are. Wheel fairings have many names. In North America, people call them wheel pants or speed fairings. In the United Kingdom, they are called wheel spats or trousers.

These covers enclose the wheel and the landing gear leg. They help create laminar flow. This is a smooth way for air to move. They also stop mud and stones from hitting the wings. This is very helpful for pusher aircraft.

Fairings are useful tools for making flight more efficient. They can be found on many different machines. You can see fairings on bicycles and motorcycles too.

They help those vehicles move through the air with less effort. Whether it is a small ultralight or a huge Boeing 747, fairings are important. They help every kind of aircraft fly more smoothly.
